General Surgeon

Life is a collection of small moments: meaningful moments, challenging moments, moments to remember. At SCDHB, we want to support our people to enjoy more of the moments that matter. Are you ready to join us?

We are seeking a General Surgeon to make our team at Timaru Public Hospital six strong.

We are offering 0.75 FTE, with a roster of 3 weeks on, 1 week completely off.

During your “on” weeks, you will commonly have 2 half day 4-hour theatre sessions, 1 half day endoscopy session, 2 half day clinics (one being a minor procedures clinic).

You will be responsible for 0.75FTE of a 5 FTE divided on call roster.

If that balance of FTE is not to your liking; there are easy avenues, within the hospital, to pick up lateral roles which increase FTE.

The intention is to provide all SMOs with a full year roster 6 months in advance to optimise work-life balance.

The position is supported by two non-training registrars for the department and a full complement of interns, aim long term is to work toward training registrars (as possible).

There is an excellent culture at the DHB which allows Surgeons to explore and develop within the profession.  The immediate team is tight-knit and supportive.

The work-life balance in Timaru is excellent, Timaru is a very convenient and practical place to raise a family with arguably the cheapest high-quality property prices in New Zealand.

As part of our duty of care towards our patients, it is crucial that all patient-facing staff be fully immunised. If you have made it to the later stages of recruitment, you will be expected to produce your immunisation records for infection control purposes.

Please also be aware if you are an overseas candidate; that the Medical Council of New Zealand requires the only recognised method of primary source verification to be undertaken using the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates’ Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (ECFMG’s EPIC) service. Being certified through EPIC is now compulsory and we therefore recommend that applicants have registered their professional credentials with EPIC.

Please visit the MCNZ website for more details about these changes and the other requirements needed to be met toward gaining NZ Vocational Scope Registration.
